Soul Theatre is a new company jumping into the great pool of diversity that is the Chicago theatre scene. Soul Theatre’s mission is to create art that is full of radiant joy – food for the soul – and to play, poke, and prod at what it means to be human. Through our art, we explore the dualities of the universe – especially the differences between belief and action, masculinity and femininity, erotic and absurd – with the intent to enrich the communities in which we perform in any way we can. Scatterbrain sweetness is dancing through our veins. We believe every meeting should end with a piece of dark chocolate.
WHAT'S GOING ON AT SOUL THEATRE?
365 Days/365 Plays was a hit!
Singing, dancing, laughter and some serious anti-war sentiment were enveloped by the Images Against War exhibit on a rainy Saturday afternoon. Nearly forty people filled the small space within the Peace Museum to watch our production of eight new plays by Pulitzer prizewinner Suzan-Lori Parks. Earlier in the week, we performed the same show for an audience of about fifty high school students in the after-school art program at the Little Black Pearl Art & Design Center.
It was really exciting for us to do these plays in these particular places, and we extend a big "Thank You!" to both for their generosity and hospitality.A great outcome of this production is that we are now discussing future projects for each of these venues. An annual Peace-fest, perhaps? An introductory theatre workshop for the teenagers? We'll see...
These plays were a perfect example of what Soul Theatre is all about - bringing important issues to light in a way that is entertaining, but also leaves you with many thoughts and questions.
We're Reorganizing - And We Need YOU!
Last summer, Soul Theatre was created out of the desire to work on a show we wanted to with people we got along with. We've come a long way since then. In November, we sat down and had a lengthy discussion about what our goals were for the company, and how we should accomplish them. The outcome of that meeting was that we have a lot of work to do, and a lot of changes to make. Soon, you'll see a whole new company rise out of our initial chaotic roots. In the meantime, here's what we need from YOU:
If you're one of these folks, please email us today and tell us how you want to be involved!
